Ingredients:
1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup boiling water 1/4 cup butter 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup cold water 1 egg 1-1/2 cups flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla
Place 1/4
cup of sugar in a heavy frying pan, and heat slowly until the sugar
becomes a syrup. Then add the boiling water. The sugar will
splutter
and harden when the water touches it, so use care not to burn
your
hand. Keep little ones away from the stove area. Cook until the
quantity
is reduced to 1 tablespoon. Cream the butter and the sugar.
Add
the caramel syrup. Drop in the whole egg, and beat well.
Mix
and sift the flour, baking powder and salt and add alternately with the
cold
water to the first mixture. Add the vanilla extract. Turn into a
well
greased pan, and bake in a moderate oven at 350 degrees for 25 to 30
minutes. |
