Boil until a soft ball is formed in glass of ice water. Do not get impatient and remove from stove before this happens. Remove from stove and add the vanilla and mix well. Place the pot in a larger pan of ice cold water, and let set till the mixture is cooled. Pour into a buttered baking pan. When hard, cut into squares... Add nuts if you wish.
