Recipe for Mrs. Nixon's Date Nut Bread Ingredients: 1 pound package of dates, chopped 1-1/2 cups boiling water 2 teaspoons baking soda 2-1/2 tablespoons butter 1-3/4 cups sugar 1 egg 2-3/4 cups flour 1 cup chopped walnuts 1-1/2 teaspoon vanilla Directions: Add the baking soda to the boiling water and mix. Put dates in large bowl, and pour boiling water over dates. Let mixture stand until dates softened. Strain the water from the dates and reserve for later. In small bowl, cream butter and sugar, then beat in egg. Add the water from the dates, add the flour and beat well with wooden spoon. Add dates, nuts and vanilla and mix well. Pour into 2 greased loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
