Looking After Your Dog, Part Five - Dog Food A balanced and nutritious diet is essential for your dogs health. Though dogs have an inherent liking for meat-based foods, they can very well survive on a vegetarian diet, provided its complete with all the required nutrients. With an enormous variety of dog foods available, deciding whats best for your dog can often be confusing. Water is an essential component of a dogs body, and your pet should have access to it at all times – this could prevent dehydration and overheating. As far as the number of feedings is concerned, for an adult dog, one or two feedings a day would suffice. However, puppies need to eat more frequently than an adult dog. Up to fifty percent of an adult dogs diet may comprise of carbohydrates. As for the food type, you could feed your dog with homemade food or commercial dog food. In general, commercial dog foods are available in three forms - dry, semi-moist and canned; with the most prevalent being dry dog foods. The dry form has a meager 10% of water content and should be supplemented by a healthy supply of fluids (water). Canned dog foods contain around 65% of water with the rest being dry stuff. Veterinarians dont recommend the semi-moist variety, since it contains an awful lot of additives in the form of preservatives. Dry dog foods are a proportionate blend of grains, meat-based products, fats, mineral and vitamins – all that a dog needs. your dog would certainly prefer canned dog foods. But there is a caveat – dogs that are fed a strict canned food diet are more likely to develop gum and teeth problems. Conclusion - No matter what the variety of commercial dog food that you purchase, it is imperative that your dogs diet adheres to the National Research Councils guidelines on canine nutrition. It would be better still if the dog food is certified by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. ![]() Meet Scooby! He Approves of all the Recipes Here! Scooby, The Rescue Dog! Hi...My name is Scooby and I am a 3-4 year old Terrier mix-part Airedale Terrier and Part Berger Picard, and possibily some Irish Terrier . I am a comedian, and also my moms's shadow. I can be very stubborn at times, but can be really intelligent when I want to be. I love to chase and catch prey..When I am in hunting mode, nothing will interupt what I am doing, not even a huge bribe of a steak bone! I am really very good at digging under fences and porches to get what I want but sometimes I get stuck and need help getting out! My mom says having me in the house is like having 4 toddlers runnning around all day! I need to be watched all the time, cause I can get into all sorts of trouble no one would ever think about! But, that's me, Lovable, Wonderful Scoobie! P.S. I am now a year older! I have tamed down quite a bit, and visitors are not so alarmed when entering the house! I still am a digger, a chaser, a hunter, and love to play! I can destroy a so called indestructible dog toy within an hour! My favorite game is tug.. Mom has discovered a way to make tug toys last longer! She takes old knee socks, and stuffs the old tug toy inside, so I dont swallow the frayed edges. I like this new tug toy! It is soft to lay my head on and I don't have to worry about choking on the frayed edges Hmmm. I wonder if I should try and take it apart? Will Mom make me a new one? Will let you know later! Smile! I have two buddies- a Shepherd/Dobie Mix named Buckley and a tiny little Parrotlet named Ricky. I lost my other best buddy, Effie last summer. She was very old, I think about 17 years and she was not up to playing with me the last couple months of her life. But, she did try! When littly Ricky, the Parrotlet, came to live with us, I thought Mom was bringing home my dinner! A Parrotlet is the worlds's smallest parrot, smaller than a parakeet but bigger than a finch. And, I was amused at his high pitched voice, not to mention his bright colors of blues and greens! He really caught my attention! It took a long time for me not to attack the cage, even though it was placed high up! I would manage to jump up anyway. Mom had to keep a baby gate in front of the room where Ricky was. I was upset, because that is my favorite room for looking out the window when I had nothing to do! Anyway, it took about 2 months of careful watching, and finally, Mom let me in the room ! (As long as Mom was home) I would just lie on the bed and look at Ricky, and sometimes, would try to get at the cage, but Mom stopped this. Gee, it took only about a week for Buckley to get used to Ricky, but not me! I have a much stronger prey drive! It has now been a year since Ricky joined us and life runs a bit smoother..However, I act like a spoiled child when Mom is talking and playing with Ricky. I start barking and get so annoying that Mom stops paying attention to Ricky and lets me go outside to play! Now, Mom can go and feed, play and talk to the little Bird without me in the way! At first Ricky the Parrotlet would fluff up and flit all over the cage when Buckley and I came in the Room. Now, he could care less, since he knows he is safe with us! (well, safe if he is in his cage!) I would not trust myself with Ricky if he was not in the cage. He is just so small, and my paws are huge! Just one paw swipe would hurt him badly! Ricky only speaks a few words, but Mom is teaching him more. He says "Pretty Birdie", Good Boy, Thank You, Kiss Kiss, and other words i do not understand.. He is probably telling me that If I come near the cage, he will bite me! And, he does bite when annoyed! Mom told me his bite is just like getting bit by a tiny dog and sometimes I see a drop of red on the finger before it gets covered up with a bandage! Ricky used to bite quite a bit when he first came to live with us, but now, he only bites on occasion, like when Mom disturbs him, because she has to clean his cage. More to come on the Life of Scooby, Buckley and Little Ricky, the Parrotlet in the future! If anyone feels that Scooby could be another type of dog, please email me and let know!
