Recipe for Sea Freeze Brownies
An Old Cape Cod Recipe from the 1950's

Ingredients:

2/3 cup salad oil
4 large eggs
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 cups sugar
1-1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon salt

Directions:
Mix oil, eggs, cocoa, sugar and blend well.

Sift dry ingredients in and beat well with wooden spoon till all flour is off the bottom of the bowl.  Add the vanilla and mix thoroughly.

Pour into an oiled 13"x9" pan and spread evenly to the corners. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. (I have found that oven temps vary..check at 20 minutes)

The above recipe which comes from the Sea Freeze Ice Cream shop that was in operation during the 1950's-1970's in Hyannis..It was on West Main Street Hyannis near the Melody Tent and run by the Andersons.

This is a very simple recipe to make-you can quickly make a few batches and people will ask you for the recipe once they try one of these brownies! Flavor and texture great.

Brownie Tip of the Month

Every few weeks, grocery stores have very good brownie mixes on sale for $1. There are usually coupons to use if you shop wisely, and you may end up getting boxes for about 50 cents.
Buy a few boxes and keep on the shelf for quick and easy desserts.

I know there are added ingredients, but if you only eat brownies once a month, no harm done.

Spending $1 for a box and making a pan of brownies (usually all you add is oil and 2 eggs) is actually less expensive than making brownies from scratch!

And, there are a couple good mixes out there that are just as good or even better than some home-made brownie recipes!

Forgotten Cape: 1940-1960, The (MA) (Images of America)

In the 1940s through the 1960s, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce promoted Cape Cod as an alluring vacationland where the blue begins, and the frets of life cease.

At the same time, a young, exuberant man with a camera, Richard Cooper Kelsey, arrived in Chatham.

Kelsey began compiling a photographic record of small town life, of Cape Cod tourist landmarks, and the real people of Cape Cod with precision and clarity.

He portrayed a Cape Cod of much beauty and charm, an earlier, more youthful time, and a time just within reach of memory.

The photographs in The Forgotten Cape: 1940-1960 were culled from the over 7,000 item Kelsey Collection of the Nickerson Room at Wilkens Library, Cape Cod Community College.
