Embroidery - A Thriving Art Form
Embroidery has been with us for many years, although it takes a number of forms. It's very popular these days with people who enjoy needlework. Most of us aren't aware of how many ways there are to embroider, nor do we know all the innovations it's taken.

Embroidery is basically adding colorful threads to fabric in order to create a design. If you purchase an item of clothing embellished with embroidery it was probably done by a machine, as embroidery can take a very long time to do by hand. Most embroidery is done with the help of a pattern, although there are many people who can do it without.

Embroidery is a relatively inexpensive hobby as the patterns, thread, and needles don't cost very much. It's fun and creative to add some color and design to clothing, tablecloths, napkins, blankets, and virtually any fabric, without going into debt. Patterns are easy to find as well. There are hundreds of websites offering patterns; some you can mail order and others you can just print from your home computer.

Advanced sewing machines are available today which can do embroidery with little assistance from you. Some are even software powered, which enables you to specify where to point the needle to craft a design to suit your requirement. But embroidery by hand still remains the first option of many people for whom it is a hobby. For them embroidery by hand provides a more fulfilling experience compared to embroidery by machine.

If you would like to try embroidery and don't know how to get started, check the schedule of your local community college. You very likely will find a class in the beginning techniques. Once you know the basics, you should be able to take on projects that you like.

Many craft fairs and embroidery conventions are organized in the country for exposure on embroidery. Apart from that, you can get a lot of information on embroidery from various other sources such as the internet. Many websites are available on the net which are purely dedicated to the cause of embroidery. These sites offer free embroidery patterns for you to download or patterns for discounted prices for you to buy.

There are many embroidery magazines that you can subscribe to which may help you get started as well. These magazines offer helpful tips and hints, as well as different patterns each month with step-by-step instructions. They also focus on what needles and different types of thread you'll need. These magazines are a great way to stay on top of upcoming events and give you great ideas for your next project, especially for seasonal ideas.

Embroidery is a hobby that many people have enjoyed for hundreds of years. You can create some beautiful designs and it is a very fulfilling past time. You don't have to be partially creative to start embroidery. As long as you can follow instructions and have a little patience, you can be creating interesting and unique designs in no time.

The Perfect Suit. Choose a jacket with small pads to define your shoulders and a waist that is slightly fitted to give you a womanly curve. Pants with a flat front and slightly-flared legs will minimize the tummy and create a longer, leaner look. A-line skirts offer good camouflage for fuller hips and thighs; skirt lengths that hit at or just below the knee flatter most figures.

Keep It Monochromatic. Wearing the same color from head to toe creates the illusion of one long, unbroken line, making you appear slimmer. Think neutrals:  black, camel, cream, dark brown.

Skim, Not Skin. Clothing should skim your curves, so look for fabrics that drape in a flattering way. Heavy fabrics will hide your shape, while super-sheer fabrics and spandex reveal a little too much. Knitwear line Ming Wang is a perfect wrinkle-free and shape-retentive clothing option.

Fit Is Key. Buy clothing that actually fits your body. Anything too large or too small will make you look heavier than you are. You won't fool anyone by stuffing yourself into a smaller siz
e or hiding your body under loose fabric.

Smooth Foundations. Wear pants and skirts with built-in shape wear to alleviate the hassle of extra layers that can create bunching throughout the day. Ming Wang has created a line of Slendersize bottoms with built in shape wear that works to smooth and contour all body types. Since Slendersize pants and skirts are available in both black and white, they can form the foundation of your wardrobe from season to season.

Sewing Tips and Sewing Hints

Drop a lot of pins and needles when you are sewing?
Can't find them?

Keep a magnet in your sewing basket. The magnet will help you find the elusive needles!

Have problems with loose buttons?

On buttons that have 4 holes,  sew only 2 holes at a time.  Break  the thread and knot.

Then, sew the other 2 holes and knot.
This way, when the button comes looses on one side, the button has a chance of staying with the garment!

Also, using dental floss or elastic thread when sewing on buttons will help keep  buttons on longer.

Need a pin cushion in a hurray? Use a bar of soap!

Need help threading an needle?

Spray a small amount of hair spray on your finger when threading the needle and
dab on the end of the thread.

This helps stiffen the thread just a tad and makes it easier to insert into the eye!

(Family Features) - Do you spend a lot of time shopping for clothes that you hardly ever wear? If so, you're not alone.

Most women spend an average of three years of their lives shopping, according to a recent survey by global online market researcher OnePoll.com. And a poll by MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk found that 25 percent of women only wear 10 per cent of the clothes they own, while 91 percent have an item in the closet that still has the tags on.

Lifestyle expert Amy Sewell, of Shop With Style, has some tips to help you put your shopping time to good use by finding fashion that suits your figure.

How to buy a Second Hand Sewing Machine:

Buying a second hand sewing machine can be a great way to save money, as long as you know what to look
for and how to avoid faulty machines. In addition to the cost of your second hand machine, you will also
need to consider the size and weight, brand and intended use.

Here are some things to consider before you begin shopping for your next sewing machine.

Size and Weight:

If you do not have a dedicated sewing spot, or are planning on traveling to sewing classes, you will want to look for a machine that is
small and light in weight. This way you will be able to easily transport it and store it away when not in use.

However, keep in mind that if you plan on sewing heavier fabrics like curtains and other soft upholstery,
you will want a machine that is bigger, sturdier and better able to handle the larger workload.

Brand:

While it is possible to get very inexpensive generic sewing machines, you may be left wishing it could do more.
So unless you are only planning to use it for an occasional repair, you will want to look for machines that are made by established brands.

With brand name sewing machines like Singer and Bernina, you’ll be guaranteed to have a quality machine. You will also have an easier
time finding accessories and replacement parts made for your specific machine.

Intended Use:

What you plan to use your sewing machine for will play a big part in the type of machine you will want to purchase.

Most sewing machines handle lightweight fabrics like cotton very easily.
However, if you plan to work with other fabrics and soft furnishings, you may want to consider
looking for sewing machines with the following features:

* Variable stitch length and width options.

* A range of stitch patterns and sewing techniques.

* Presser feet for different functions such as sewing button holes, creating seams, quilting and hemming.

* Large sewing bed or extension for sewing curtains.

Buying Second Hand:

When you start looking for your second hand sewing machine, remember to take care looking not only at the price but
also the condition and wear of the machine. When shopping through eBay, make sure you check out the seller’s rating
to ensure they have good feedback with their merchandise.

You will also want to see if there is a warranty, when it expires and if the warranty is good with the manufacturer or only the shop it was purchased in. Finally, check to see that it still comes with the original manual.

If not, you might be able to find it on the web for download.

Getting Started:

Buying a second hand sewing machine is a great way to save a bit of money.

As long as you know exactly what you are planning to use the machine for, and know what to avoid,
you will be able to find great sewing machines for incredible deals.

Comfort is Always in Fashion

(Family Features) - Finding a fresh look that is right for you can be an arduous task, but a change of season is the perfect time to find natural style inspiration. Thanks to the shift in colors and climates, seasonal transitions are an ideal opportunity to find new wardrobe staples to make you feel fabulous-and help achieve a flawless look that radiates confidence.

Whether you prefer neutrals, colorblock, prints or florals, the key to dressing in fashion is to be stylish while keeping comfort in mind. Even when wearing your newest trendy dress - the season's hot silhouette - feeling comfortable underneath it all is the secret to looking gorgeous.

Helena Christensen, international supermodel, photographer and spokesperson for the Bali intimate apparel line of bras, panties and shapewear, knows a thing or two about what it takes to feel beautiful. "When I put on an attractive bra first thing in the morning it gives me a wonderful feeling and sense of confidence. No matter what clothes I wear, it's important to me that what I wear underneath them both looks and feels amazing," says Christensen.

Christensen suggests updating your wardrobe for the coming season with a few fashion-meets-function tips:

Beauty Beneath. A bra might not be the first item you consider for seasonal wardrobe purchases, but an ill-fitting bra or sliding straps will affect your confidence and keep you from pulling off a stylish outfit. A pretty bra should provide support and comfort, but a bra needs to do more than just that: It needs to stay in place and deliver a flawless fit.

Christensen recommends the Bali Comfort-U Design bra "for a look that provides a seamless, sleek look to my outfit while also fitting comfortably," she comments. "It has a unique design in a place where most women wouldn't think to look - the back - and this special feature allows me to feel amazing and look chic, all day long."

Sleek and Slim-with Confidence. Sleek chemise shirts and tight white slacks are all the rage, but their tight-fitting cuts can be intimidating. Christensen suggests Bali's Hi-Waisted Thigh Slimmer from the brand's Powershape Collection, which is worn underneath clothes to help provide a smooth, irresistible shape - and the poise you need to slip into a hot form-fitting outfit for a night out on the town.

Blouses are Back. After years of being out of the spotlight, blouses are buttoning up a feminine and flirty fashion trend. Try fabrics such as lace, sheer materials or linen paired with the Smoothing Cami from the Bali Invisibles Collection, which fits like second-skin and won't feel bulky under even the most delicate clothing.

Dare to Wear Bright Colors and Patterns. Whether you look best in jewel tones or pastels, wearing color brightens your skin tone and can have a similar effect on your mood. Don't shy away from printed brights, striking solids or floral and animal prints, which are easy ways to infuse your wardrobe with confidence and energy. Update your office suit with a ruffled blouse or bright pattern for a bold move, but be sure your undergarments are not detracting from your outfit.
