Cleaning Makes the Grade

Small Efforts at Home Can Make a Big Impact on Children's Success at School

(Family Features) - Parents send their children to school with the hope that the knowledge they are acquiring in the classroom will set them up for future success. However, mom and dad may not recognize that routine activities they do at home also are helping kids make the grade.

A recent study of nearly 5,000 high school students, conducted by Dr. Alan Hirsh and the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, found top performing students (those with grade averages of A and B) overwhelmingly-84 percent-used words like "lemony, minty or clean" to describe the smell of their childhood homes. More than one-third (34 percent) of lower performing students (average of C or below) associated negative smells-of urine, fecal matter or mold-with their homes.

While the study focused on scent, Dr. Hirsch said it's unlikely there is something within those specific odors that causes academic success. Dr. Hirsh said a more likely explanation is that there is a positive connection between a well-cared-for home and the sort of stable family environment that promotes academic success.

"The good news for moms - and their kids - is that the hard work they put into everyday chores like scrubbing floors and washing windows results in more than just a home that looks, feels and smells clean," said Jennifer James, founder of The Mom Bloggers Club. "It's not about a clean house - it is about the powerful difference parents can make in the lives of their children."

James shares a few of her favorite ideas on how to turn routine tasks into springboards for success:

Be a cheerleader: Give your kids a "hooray" for all the hard work they are doing on their homework and chores. Remember to focus on the effort, not the achievement, to make them excited about facing future challenges. Celebrate their work in big and small ways - from buying a special treat after a big test to giving daily reminders that you love them.

Read to succeed: Let children pick out their own books and help them develop a life-long love of reading. They'll appreciate the freedom of choice, and reading engages the imagination and boosts memory. Reading is such a critical habit to develop that the makers of Pine-Sol brand cleaners have teamed up with Reading is Fundamental to ensure all kids are enjoying the benefits. You can participate by "Liking" the Pine-Sol Facebook page. For every two "Likes," the brand will donate a book to RIF up to 5,000 books.

Make meals matter: Sit down for dinner together. Studies show that if children experience regular meals with family, they are more likely to stay away from drugs and do better in school.

Encourage playtime: Your family's favorite card and board games are great opportunities to practice basic skills like spelling and counting. Make them a regular activity and watch your children improve their game while enjoying the education.

A Poem    Take Time

Take time to work-it is the price of success.
Take time to think-it is the source of power.
Take time to play-it is the secret of youth.
Take time to read-it is the foundation of knowledge.
Take time to worship-it is the highway of reverence and
washes the dust of earth from our eyes.
Take time to help and enjoy friends-it is the source of happiness.
Take time to love- it is the one sacrament of life.
Take time to dream-it hitches the soul to the stars.
Take time to laugh-it is the singing that helps with life's loads.
Take time to plan-it is the secret of being able to have time for the first nine things!

I was impressed with this-hope you are too!

Kids Safety on the Internet

The Internet is said to be a pool of information where
you can find information on any topic. It is the best place to gain knowledge and information along with being in
constant touch with your dear ones.

Despite many advantages and benefits, Internet is still considered
to be the unsafe zone for the kids as they may fall prey to the criminals in the world of immense pain and treachery.

Since the advent of Internet there has been a significant increase in number of kids falling into this trap.
Despite vigilance over them either by friends, parents, law enforcement bodies still the count is on a rise.

In certain cases the relationship is put to a stop by the timely intervention but there are times when there
are kids who are not subject to vigilance. And if they by chance happen to meet these individuals
they meet the torturous fate of being abducted, raped, tortured or even killed.

Many internet companies, including America Online, Yahoo!, and Netscape, offer parental control features
that allow you to block and monitor your child’s access to the World Wide Web. You would not dare
allow your child to explore all cable channels and watch inappropriate shows, so you should
also monitor your child’s access to the internet to ensure he or she does not open any inappropriate sites.

It's a good idea to talk to your child and explain the internet safety techniques.

Keep a close watch on what kind of persons your child is conversing with, and monitor them during the conversation.
Always be there for your child when he or she wants to share something with you.

As a rule, schools and libraries do not allow unlimited access to the internet.
They have strict rules to regulate what areas of World Wide Web are permissible for kids. If this is not the case, you should raise
this issue with school boards or city authorities to impose such rules at these locations.

Internet vigilance over kids is not only restricted to schools and homes but also to those
places where your kid is visiting. If your kid is going for the party at a friend's place then
make sure that his parents know your attitude regarding Internet access.

Majority of the parents allow their kids to go to those friends where there is complete parent supervision.

The best way for constant supervision is in placing the computer in that room where everyone can view the screen.
It is always advisable to place computer in a living room or family room so that there is complete vigilance.

This confirms that your kid is not alone while accessing the Internet.

Above all, you must communicate freely with your child and talk about the dangers of the internet.
Of course, there is no point in scaring the child but it's important to make him or her aware
of potential problems that may arise.

Also teach your child how to report such individuals who are participating in undesirable communication.

Ensuring your childs protection while on the internet will not only give you a safe piece of mind, but it will
also notify your child of the proper way to explore the World Wide Web. The internet can be a fantastic place for kids
of all ages as soon as you instruct your child to the right and wrong of the internet.
